Dentist Teeth Cleaning & Hygiene Treatments
Professional dentist teeth cleaning is an essential part of your oral health and ongoing dental care. Professional cleanings involve the scaling and polishing of your teeth to remove built-up plaque and tartar. This helps prevent the development of gum disease and cavities which can then require fillings and/or root canals. We offer dentist teeth cleaning in Hamilton as a core part of our dental services and treatments.
What does a dentist teeth cleaning involve?
The procedure begins with a quick examination of your mouth to make sure there are no signs of pre-existing teeth or gum issues that might inhibit the cleaning of your teeth.
Once the dentist/hygienist is satisfied it is fine to proceed, they’ll do so by removing the plaque and tartar that has built up since your last visit. This will involve some gentle scrapping in and around your teeth and gums.
Your teeth will then be cleaned and polished to make sure any remaining plaque/tartar is removed and there may also be some additional flossing should it be deemed necessary. You’ll then have the opportunity to rinse your mouth out.
Last but not least, a fluoride treatment will be applied around your teeth which will help fight against cavities, effective for a period of a few months in combination with good personal dental care at home.
Whilst a professional dentist clean is a great way to look after your teeth, it is also important to carry out regular cleaning of your teeth at home, at least twice a day. Good oral hygiene practice, including brushing, flossing and using mouthwash, can really help to reduce the potential for issues to develop with your teeth and in your mouth.
What are the benefits of teeth cleaning?
The main benefit of teeth cleaning by your dentist or dental hygienist is it removes the existing bacteria, plaque and tartar. This in turn can help slow the progression of gum recession where the gums begin to pull back from the advancing tartar. Over time bone loss associated with this gum recession can lead to wiggly teeth. This is where we get the saying “getting long in the tooth!”
While regular brushing and flossing of your own teeth achieve removal to some extent, there are areas in your mouth that will inevitably be missed over time. Once plaque forms into tartar, the hardened nature of it means it can then only be safely removed by a dentist or hygienist.
Does dental cleaning of your teeth hurt?
A professional dental cleaning treatment shouldn’t hurt and our dentists at the Hamilton Dental Centre have years of experience delivering pain-free procedures for patients in Hamilton.
In some cases, however, the existence of gum inflammation and/or tooth decay at the time of cleaning can increase the sensitivity around the teeth of the patients. If you are feeling any discomfort during the procedure or are concerned that you might beforehand - our dentists will ensure they do all they can to mitigate these feelings and concerns.
How often should you have your teeth cleaned?
We typically recommend having your teeth cleaned by a dentist or dental hygienist once to twice a year as indicated, when combined with good personal dental hygiene practices at home which include a healthy lifestyle and diet.
If this isn’t the case and you’ve suffered from dental problems in the past, you may wish to have your teeth cleaned more frequently. Our team will be able to discuss the best treatment option and plan for you based on your history and circumstances.
How much does it cost to get your teeth cleaned?
The current cost to get your teeth cleaned at the Hamilton Dental Centre is usually $190 for up to 45 minutes. If these costs vary you will always be informed before your treatment commences.
We also offer 12 - 18 or 24 Months Interest-Free Payment plans for our patients as well.
